Here's what to expect during the Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace:
“Diversity is a reality, Inclusion in a choice” Included, 2023
In order to discuss the more nuanced topics and aspects of diversity and inclusion, we need to cover the foundations of this work.
This session will cover the historic and modern context of diversity and inclusion work, introducing key terms and concepts for the course:
To understand the different terms, such as diversity and equality, equity and intersectionality, and how language around diversity and inclusion shifts and becomes political.
To understand the context of systemic discrimination, and its relationship to today’s common understanding of workplace equality.
To understand why this work is important, and examples of where it goes right and wrong.
In order to build more equitable and inclusive environments, we need to understand the subconscious processes that may be affecting our ability to do so. This session will outline one of the key concepts for DEI work – bias:
Understanding bias – what it is and why it matters
Identifying our biases – what are my biases (and how can I help others identify theirs), how have they developed, and how might they be affecting me and the way I interact with others
Mitigating our biases – what can we do to limit the effects of our biases on our decision-making
Maturity model and diagnosing your current state.
Conducting an audit and planning your journey.
Determining priorities and crafting a strategy from the best identified starting points.
You can’t tell if you’re making progress if you don’t measure it. This session will help you understand how and why you might measure diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Understand the importance of measurement going beyond just counting gender, age, race, etc.
Learn how to measure, communicate (in a way that’s accessible), and utilise diversity statistics
Develop techniques for quantitatively measuring inclusion
Understand how governance relates to Data, strategy, leadership and systems in delivering a sustainable D&I change in your organisation.
Understand what DI governance looks like within an organisation and how this varies depending on organisation size/structure.
Introduce RACI framework as a tool for managing accountability for action.
Unconscious bias and exclusion can show up in workplace processes such as recruitment, promotion, and working practice – but so can inclusion. In this session we will explore the ways in which we can welcome, retain, promote, and support our colleagues and teams.
Understand how recruitment, promotion and working practices can perpetuate or dismantle inequality.
Identify the reasons for inclusive recruitment, promotion, and working practices.
Learn how to improve recruitment, promotion, and working practices to be more inclusive and ethical
“To be able to continue to move forward, and advance access and equity, we need companies and organisations to commit to fostering truly inclusive workplaces. That means going beyond the hiring process, and working on implementing strategies to keep your Disabled talent.” (Becca Lory Hector, 2023)
After exploring the components of diversity and inclusion in the workplace, in this session, we will discuss what inclusion looks like in our own contexts, creating plans for how we can make positive change in our workplaces.
To understand the challenges of diversity and inclusion work, and how to navigate them.
To identify a clear goal to improve diversity and inclusion.
To identify the blockers and enablers for a chosen diversity and inclusion goal
