Every employee has the right to be treated with dignity and respect in the workplace. Bullying and harassment of any kind should not be tolerated whether employees work at a fixed location, at home, or on the move. Both employees and employers have a role to play in promoting a positive workplace culture free from bullying.
The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) have developed a Code of Practice for Employers and Employees on the Prevention and Resolution of Bullying at Work, which contains practical guidance on how to prevent and address workplace bullying.
Legal Island has created an eLearning course in partnership with Ogier, specifically for all employees in Ireland. The provision of this Workplace Bullying training course for your staff will enable your organisation to act in compliance with the code and help to raise awareness of bullying and harassment in the workplace.
In order to promote a positive workplace culture where everyone feels safe and valued, our bullying at work training course will also explain reasonable and unreasonable behaviour, the different forms of bullying, including workplace violence and sexual harassment, and what to do if employees are concerned about bullying.
The purpose of our anti-bullying training course is to raise awareness of bullying in the workplace, bullying behaviour identification (and behaviour that is not considered bullying), and explain bullying reporting procedures.
The course will outline the various roles referenced in the Code, including the Contact Person, who will act as the first point of contact for anyone making a bullying complaint. The course will also explain how organisations can ensure their bullying and harassment policy complies with the Code.
This course has been recently updated and now includes the most recent bullying statistics from Ireland, a new ‘Meet the colleagues’ section, and information on how artificial intelligence can impact workplace bullying in Ireland.
This course was designed specifically for organisations based in Ireland, in partnership with the employment law team at Ogier Leman LLP.
Should you have a particular need to brand or tailor any of our courses to your specific requirements, that is no problem at all. We offer a full bespoke service in-house. Bullying at work has been described in various ways. The Code defines bullying as:
“Repeated, inappropriate behaviour, direct or indirect, whether verbal, physical, or otherwise, conducted by one or more persons against another or others, at the place of work and/or in the course of employment, which could reasonably be regarded as undermining the individual’s right to dignity at work.”
The Code highlights a non-exhaustive list of what does not constitute bullying. This includes:
The Code also highlights that while bullying and harassment are often referred to together, they are in fact, separate and distinct. Our bullying at work training course will highlight the difference between these two similar yet different problems.
Harassment is similar to bullying as it constitutes unwelcome conduct such as verbal abuse, graphic or written statements, threats, physical assault, or other conduct that is threatening or humiliating.
However, in contrast to bullying, the negative behaviour defined as harassment is based on an employee’s race, colour, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability, or national origin.
If you are interested in Workplace Harassment training specifically, Legal Island offers a Workplace Harassment eLearning course. This eLearning course offers comprehensive training on preventing and addressing workplace and sexual harassment.
Legal Island’s course also covers bullying impact training to highlight the repercussions of bullying at work. Workplace bullying can contribute to a number of problems for both the company and employees.
Employees may experience increased anxiety and stress, panic attacks, low self-esteem, physical and mental health issues, among other things. This can, in turn, contribute to problems for the company as a whole as it can result in decreased morale, absenteeism, and higher employee turnover.
Employee satisfaction is a significant factor in ensuring an organisation’s success by preventing high levels of staff turnover and ensuring employees are happy within their role. So, bullying at work can have a major impact on the overall success and reputation of your company.
In order to prevent bullying at work, it’s important to invest in harassment prevention programs and bullying prevention courses.
Our Workplace Bullying training for Irish companies will help you create a positive and inclusive workplace environment that aligns with your organisation's values and sends a clear message of zero tolerance to bullying, while ensuring employees are aware of the negative impacts of bullying in the workplace will go a long way to helping lower the risk of workplace violence.
It is vital that all employees have an understanding of what bullying is and how to address it.
Training to prevent or at least minimise the risk of bullying in the workplace is a key part of the Code. Employers should provide workplace bullying training to all staff on commencement, together with regular refresher updates throughout their employment.
Legal Island has created a Workplace Bullying eLearning training course specifically for all staff in Ireland to enable your organisation to raise awareness of bullying and harassment in the workplace and explain what to do if employees are concerned about bullying.
The course will take no longer than 45 minutes to complete, including a final assessment and certificate of completion.
As well as the provision of awareness training for all employees as mentioned above, the Code outlines the requirement for the appointed Contact and Nominated person/s to have a full and clear understanding of their role, as well as their duties and obligations under the Code.
Legal Island has created a training course for both the Contact and Nominated person, designed to give you the tools and knowledge you need to fulfill your role.
We also offer Workplace Bullying training for Irish businesses on the ‘role of a contact person’. This course will raise awareness of bullying and explain the role of a contact person in resolving bullying in an organisation.
The Code of Practice states that there is value in appointing a contact person to act as the first step for anyone enquiring about a possible bullying case. Their role is to help employees clarify what they are experiencing and empower them to decide what course of action, if any, they may wish to take.
The role can be crucial, as it often helps to resolve matters earlier and more effectively.
We also offer training for the ‘role of nominated person’ to raise awareness of bullying and explain the role of this person in resolving bullying within an organisation.
The nominated person plays a very important role and is pivotal in altering bullying cultures and handling complaints effectively. An employer will nominate a person who has had appropriate training and is familiar with the procedures involved to deal with the complaint on behalf of the organisation.
